Oracle and NetBeans

Following the Sun-Oracle town hall meeting last week at Oracle headquarters where Larry and Scott made a few exciting announcements, I started getting questions about Oracle's position vis-a-vis NetBeans. The reason is that Scott (and later Jonathan Schwartz on his blog) mentioned some kind Oracle "adoption and endorsement" of NetBeans.

Oracle's IDE strategy is very clear, Thomas Kurian's interview on OTN earlier this week doesn't leave much room for interpretation and at the moment Oracle's tools strategy is limited to JDeveloper and Eclipse. Here is the statement from Thomas, Oracle's Senior Vice President for Oracle Fusion Middleware:

"At Oracle, we have our own development tool, Oracle JDeveloper, which is available for free download. Our new version, JDeveloper 10
g Release 3, has an extensive list of new features and is the single biggest release we have ever done of the product…

...Because we are committed to providing developers with choice, we are also taking a leadership role within the Eclipse community. We are currently leading three different groups within the Eclipse Foundation for Java and BPEL technologies, and we are actively involved in integrating our Fusion Middleware products with Eclipse. Oracle is focused on JDeveloper and Eclipse. We certainly think Sun's NetBeans initiative is important in the marketplace, and we're watching it very closely. But as of right now, Oracle is focused on JDeveloper and Eclipse and we have no plans to adopt either NetBeans or any of its technology. Any statements to the contrary by anyone else in the industry are not true."

  • JDeveloper is a bit of a joke - and falling far behind both NetBeans and Eclipse.

  • Will there be -- or is there currently -- a JDeveloper version that runs in Eclipse?

  • JDeveloper running on Eclipse doesn't make a lot of sense. However we believe in "productivity with choice" and realize that many Oracle customers use Eclipse so we are leading 3 Eclipse projects and dedicating resources to providing comparable productivity features on Eclipse. Meanwhile JDev is free and it really is a great IDE. More people should check it out.

  • Why not to try to do the same what IBM did?
    A competition!, an award!
For the best plug-in connecting Oracle and Net Beans, for the best Oracle application developed only in NetBeans? For the best use of NetBeans in Oracle-related projects in academy? For the best open source Oracle compatible software developed in NetBeans?
    It will encourage many enthusiast.
Students and developers are happy to get "Oracle award" item to the CV.
Investing little money, you can get many good projects and products

    See, for example
    http://www-304.ibm.com/jct09002c/university/scholars/products/eclipse/eig.html

In our department, only I am the NetBeans user since I am NetBeans addicted for many years.
    Other are Eclipse users
    Why?
Some people try to win an Eclipse award. They fail, but they used to Eclipse, they used to Eclipse plug-ins, they depend on Eclipse...
Other participate in the project, and project coordinator was Eclipse user by the same reasons.

  • Is JDeveloper really Free?

    LICENSE RIGHTS
We grant you a nonexclusive, nontransferable limited license to use the programs only for the purpose of developing a single prototype of your application, and not for any other purpose. If you use the application you develop under this license for any internal data processing or for any commercial or production purposes, or you want to use the programs for any purpose other than as permitted under this agreement, you must contact us, or an Oracle reseller, to obtain the appropriate license. We may audit your use of the programs. Program documentation may be accessed online at http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation.

  • Hi,

Not sure where you got that license but we would love to know how you got it, please share.

The most recent license for JDev can be found here:

    http://www.oracle.com/technology/
    software/popup-license/jdev-license.html

It clearly says that except for ADF components you can use the IDE freely and distribute, etc.

    I hope this helps.

  • This license is a shame for Oracle. They should ship Jdeveloper *without* ADF, since it is not free ($5000/CPU!) if you do not use OAS. Also it is VERY difficult to find what is free and what is not free ( I was looking for the license but only found a FAQ that describes those "details"). How much does a user-based license for ADF costs??? I can't find that info even it is said in the FAQ that I need it for a client/server java app.

  • I have developed sound recording software. However, it becomes limited for five minutes only. When I tried to record for more than six minutes, it gives me an error of the buffer.
that is "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space".

How can I make it able to record for more than 30 minutes?
    With great regards!!!
